PSHE

PSHE at St Mary’s Hampton

At St Mary’s Hampton, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education plays a vital role in supporting pupils’ wellbeing and personal development. Through PSHE, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and values they need to lead healthy, safe and responsible lives, build positive relationships and become confident, respectful members of society.

Our PSHE curriculum is based on the Jigsaw PSHE scheme of work and is designed to meet statutory requirements and reflect the needs of our pupils. It provides a clear and progressive structure from Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 2, ensuring that learning builds year by year. The curriculum supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development and contributes to their understanding of British values.

How PSHE Is Taught

At St Mary’s Hampton, PSHE is taught through a carefully sequenced and engaging curriculum using the Jigsaw scheme. Lessons follow a spiral approach, allowing pupils to revisit key themes and concepts while deepening their understanding as they progress through the school.

The Jigsaw programme is structured around six core themes:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Lessons provide opportunities for pupils to:

  • Develop self-awareness, confidence and resilience
  • Build positive relationships and show respect for others
  • Understand and manage emotions
  • Learn how to keep themselves healthy and safe
  • Develop an age-appropriate understanding of relationships and changes

Teaching places a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, discussion and reflection. A calm, supportive learning environment is created where pupils feel safe to share ideas, listen to others and express their views respectfully. Lessons are delivered in an age-appropriate and sensitive way, ensuring that all pupils feel included and supported.

In Key Stage 1, pupils focus on developing a sense of belonging, understanding feelings, forming positive relationships and learning basic strategies for keeping safe and healthy. In Key Stage 2, pupils build on these foundations by exploring more complex ideas around identity, friendships, wellbeing, aspirations and change, including preparation for transition to secondary school.

PSHE lessons encourage participation, empathy and reflection, supporting pupils to apply learning to real-life situations. The curriculum is inclusive and designed to support all learners, including pupils with SEND.

How PSHE Is Assessed

Assessment in PSHE at St Mary’s Hampton is ongoing and formative, focusing on pupils’ personal development and understanding rather than attainment in a traditional academic sense.

Teachers assess learning through:

  • Observation of pupils’ engagement, contributions and reflections during lessons
  • Discussion and questioning to explore understanding and attitudes
  • Review of written work, drawings or personal responses over time
  • Pupils’ ability to apply learning to real-life situations and make informed choices

Progress is measured by pupils’ growing self-awareness, emotional literacy, confidence and ability to build and maintain positive relationships. This approach ensures that assessment supports learning, values individual progress and celebrates personal development at every stage.

Across the school, PSHE at St Mary’s Hampton is designed to be supportive, inclusive and ambitious, helping all pupils to develop the skills and understanding they need to thrive both now and in the future.
